Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor

The Logan family saga continues in this novel about the trials that as an African American family they face during the 1930s , a time of racial discrimination and economic depression.
As the main character, Cassie, again witnesses the racism that the white men inflict on her own family and their African American community of men and women. This time , though, the men are more threatening than Mr. Andersen is in "Song of the Trees". Now the reader gets a glimpse of the Ku Klux Klan, a racial suppremacist group that even includes the town sheriff and the wealthy landowner, Mr. Harland Granger.
Does the reader perceive any positive elements in Cassie's world despite the prejudice set against her and her family?

  3. The Ku Klux Klan is known for their violence, and lynching to murder, oppressing African Americans, Jews and other minorities, but mostly African Americans. Even now a days the Ku Klux Klan still roams some places in The States. Even though I have not read the book (I cant find it in any bookstore!)it seems very interesting. And answering your question I think that the reader will see even with all their up against the still LOVE each other and nothing will change that.

  8. From what I've heard and read this seems like a very interesting story because it is going to teach us a little bit more about racial discrimination and the economic crisis the Logan's sadly had to go through. I think some people may find it a little bit boring at first but it will get very interesting as the story builds up...

  12. I would like to learn about the daily life of these people during this time. It makes me wonder how much did people suffer during this time? It will be good for us to read this story because we are living in a time similar like the one in the story. Ana García Roig 7B-2

  13. Even though Cassie and her brothers were poor and discriminated, they had the opportunity to learn how to read and write. This may seem not much, but education is very important to triumph in life. This is the reason why we have an African American president today.

  14. The Logan family was struggling to keep their land. However they were willing to give everything, even sell their car. This shows that the Logan family are and always will be there to help each other in any situation and will do any to protect the forest.

  15. Even though the Logan family wasn't very rich, the kids received education and manners not like other poor families who do not care one for another. "Roll of Thunder hear my Cry" is a very good story. It teaches me somehow values of life, values about family, and friendship. It is a great book, even though its a bit sad beacause of the discrimitation. Roll of thunder hear my cry, isa a marvelous story.

  16. I think that "Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry" by Mildred Taylor is a life learning experience. I think it's a life learning experience because we didn't live in those times so when you read the story you can tell that sometimes they suffered. It was difficult to live in those time not only because of the racial discrimination, but also because they were going through the Great Depression. I think they were in a bad situation, but they lived happy because they lived together.

  17. From what I've heard this is a really good story because it’s about racial discrimination in the Great Depression and it shows us really good lessons like for example what Martin Luther King said “Don’t judge people by their color of there skin”. But I have also heard that is a sad story because they treat black people very bad. I really liked the story but for my opinion I think that it is very sad how the treated and they still do treat black people like that and we should be thanked that we didn't have to suffered those bad times in life.

  18. First, I think that although they lived in the Great Depression and there was a lot of racial discrimination, they lived happy because they were a really united family and they supported each other as a family and as friends .Second, this story describes a lot of how they lived and how was their daily life and that is really good because you can relate to what is happening in the story and you can feel as if you were one of the characters in the story,as if you were right there beside them.

  19. In this story there are many positive elements because, even though there is racial discrimination and they are living through the Great Depression, they are united as a family, they don't live on anybody's land except they're own and they aren't that poor that they won't have money for food or education, like other families are suffering.

  21. I think that here are positive elements in the story because it teaches you that if you are African-American it tells you how to deal with the others. It teaches you how to have your respect, dignity, or legacy if you're in the middle of a bad situation.

  23. This is a very sad and tough story because of the racial discrimination in the 1930’s. This family had to go through many obstacles. The Logan's sadly where always fighting for their rights and economic crisis. And I think we will all learn how much people have suffered because of that. So I think this is going to be a very interesting story.

  24. This story talks a lot about reseal discrimination and about this family that fights for their rights. Cassie had all the right to be mad and stubborn about it because it was unfair. At some parts of the story the kids and Cassie whet to far but it is because they are being treated very rung. I think that it is not fare for this family and the black people to be treated like that and that Cassie did the right thing.

  25. This story tells you a lot of the racial descrimination of the people in that time, and we can learn a lot of it. The racial descrimination was so unfair with the other people. Cassie had all the rights to be treated the same as the other people.

  27. I think is a really good book and it shows you about how some people have to defend themselves from racists. I think the Logan family is very close and are very brave in the point that they have to protect themselves from a lot of problems and people that want to harm them or be mean to them.

  28. This book tells an amazing story to learn about the racism in the 1930's. All the African Americans had a hard life since the whote people had more privileges than the African Americans. This life seemed so unfair and Cassie wanted to change this type of living. She felt very bad for what was happening and she wanted to stop it.

  29. Yes, there are positive elements in Cassie's world despite the prejudice against her family. Cassie is very lucky because she has a very close family. Even though there is racism in the community Cassie is raised in a loving environment. Also, her family teaches her to be happy with who she is and not hate white people.

  31. I think that the positive element in this story is that the Logan family and their community show a great example of opposition to the unfair and cruel treatment that they receive from the white people. They fight for their dignity, legacy and the injustice committed; especially because of the unique treatment that white people receive. David and Mama Logan realize the value of education and of owning their own land. The family is very united, and they are very willing to help out others in need.

  33. The story is about this girl named Cassie and her family who lived during the Great Depression, where the white man despised them. I liked this novella because it showed me about life during the Great Depression. I didn’t expect for it to be this hard for the African-American people. The white men didn’t have respect for the African- American people; they treat them like slaves and though they had no value. It was very hard for them to deal with this situation. African- American people are human beings, not trash; they also had feelings and a life like everybody in this world and white men had no right to abuse them.

What I love about the story is that the family was always together. They respect each other, loved each other, and defend each other. I admire that because when you have your confidence for family everything will be better.

  35. Your comments share a common bond: the importance of family togetherness which is crucial to weather any obstacle or situation that may come.
The Logans give a fine example of family unity;they stand beside each together to fight against injustice, racial discrimination and crimes committed against African Americans.
In spite of the economic crisis of the 1930s, they uphold their Christmas traditions by celebrating this holiday with a bountiful Christmas dinner and having gifts for the children.

No matter all the racism and prejudice the Logan family gets through the crisis times ,they are going to stick together and nothing or no one is going to separate them, even that David Logan is in a job trip he is going to protect his family and legacy when he comes back.

  45. From what i red this is a good story because it teaches you that no matter what place, region, color were all persons. If we lived in that world that the Logan's lived we shoulden't have divissions of color. In the things of buyng and everything that is not personal no one should have privilage, just because your white dosen't mean you get it free. This story teaces you also to fight for who you are!

I think this book shows how African Americans were discriminated because of their race (even if they cannot change that). I find that this book was a great reference to 1930’s racial tension between whites and African Americans. I am appalled by the fact that they treated them like slaves and as if they had no feelings or sentimental value (or any value for that matter) at all. I pray for all of this racism in the world to end as soon as possible, for it is very disturbing to see how they treated them it is fair to know of what had happened in certain times of high numbers of racist people in the USA only. I wish that in the near future this does not happen again.

  51. The story Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry, by Mildred Taylor is a book that teaches life experience. It was sad seeing the Logan family being discriminated, but i learned how people use to treat the African American. Now I have more respect for them because this book teaches me that they are just like us. The Logan family love each other, they celebrate Christmas, and they support each other through those rough time.
